How to sign a PDF without printing it

Updated October 30, 2026 · 6 min read

You don't need a printer or a scanner to sign a PDF. You can add your signature on your phone or computer in about a minute. Here are three ways to do it, and what to check before you send the form.

Three ways to add your signature

1. Draw it

Sign with your finger on a phone or tablet, or with a mouse or trackpad on a computer. It looks the most like your real signature, especially with a finger or stylus.

2. Type it

Type your full name and pick a handwriting-style font. It's quick and always neat, and it suits forms where a typed signature is acceptable.

3. Upload a photo of your signature

Sign a sheet of plain white paper, take a clear photo, and upload it. FieldFillerPro removes the paper background so only your ink is left, in its real colour.

For a clean photo: use a dark pen (black or blue), sign a bit larger than usual, photograph in good, even light without shadows, and keep the phone parallel to the paper.

Step by step with FieldFillerPro

  1. Open your PDF. Go to fieldfillerpro.com and choose the file. It's opened on your device, not uploaded.
  2. Find the signature spot. If the form has a signature field, it shows a yellow Sign here box. Otherwise, tap Sign at the top.
  3. Create your signature. Choose Draw, Type or Upload, pick black or blue ink, and tap Use signature.
  4. Place it. On a signature field it lands on the line automatically. Otherwise, tap where it should go. Drag to move it, and drag the corner dot to resize.
  5. Download. Tap Done, then Download PDF. Keep Lock the filled form on for a final copy.

Signing several places? Your signature is offered again under Use again, so you only create it once per visit.

Is an electronic signature valid?

Often, yes. In the United States, the federal ESIGN Act generally gives electronic signatures the same legal effect as handwritten ones for many transactions, and many organizations accept them. For example, SEVP explicitly accepts electronic signatures on Form I-983.

The organization receiving your form decides what it accepts, though. Some documents still need a handwritten ("wet ink") signature, a notary, or a certified digital signature. If you're not sure, ask before you send.

Electronic vs digital signature: an electronic signature is your signature added to the document as an image or typed name, which is what FieldFillerPro creates. A digital signature is a certificate-based, cryptographic seal from services that verify identity, used when a document must prove who signed it.

Questions

Is my signature saved anywhere?

No. Your signature is created and kept on your device only while the page is open. It's never uploaded, and it's cleared when you close the tab.

Can I sign on an iPhone or Android phone?

Yes. Open fieldfillerpro.com in your phone's browser, and draw with your finger or upload a photo. For long forms, a laptop is easier.

Can I change the signature colour?

Yes. Drawn and typed signatures can be black or blue. Uploaded signatures keep the colour of your pen.
